Room 15 Black Jaguars

I thought it’s about time I shared a few photos from the activities we’ve been doing!

Last week with our Buddies we read Hickory Dickory Dash, in preparation for National Simultaneous Story Time. Reading the book inspired us to make some clocks outside using a hoop and natural materials. We made a good start, but the rain stopped us from being able to finish which is a shame. Nevertheless, we had fun and managed to get some pics!

To prepare themselves to be Historians, the jaguars made Historian hats.
First we focused on being Questioners. We joined up with room 14 to explore some artifacts from the Mystery History box and used an app called Padlet to post some questions we had about the artifacts. Using question dice and a question matrix helped everyone to generate interesting questions that went beyond “what is it? and “what does it do?”.

We also had a guest speaker (a real historian!) come to talk about what he does, and to answer some questions that the children had about being a historian.

What’s the buzz?

So far in “What’s the buzz?” we have looked at:

Steps to greet people

• smile
• make eye contact
• speak using a friendly voice

Accepting a greeting

• look and smile
• move closer
• speak

Saying goodbye

• say goodbye when you leave or plan to do something else
• make it a friendly goodbye
• handshakes/hugs/waves

You can help your child by:

• talk about greeting people before it happens
• giving reminders or a secret signal when they meet people or say goodbye
• teach them how to handshake

Positive attention seeking behaviours

• timing
• smile
• positive body language
• offer to help
• follow instructions of trusted adults

Demanding attention seeking behaviours

• look angry
• boss/threaten/tease others
• interrupt
• act silly
• stand too close

It’s very easy for demanding behaviours to become habits.
You can help your child by:

• talking about which behaviours they think they display generally, or as it’s happening (now that we’ve talked about the behaviours, you can pull them up on it!)
• recognising and praising positive attention seeking behaviours
• helping to rephrase demanding attention seeking requests, eg. “I want… “, “I need…”, “Why can’t I…”

 

Don’t forget, we have our excursion next week! It looks like the weather might not be on our side, so please make sure the wet weather gear still fits. I’ll be packing my wellies and rain coat.

Here are the term overviews from the specialist teachers.

Music
Term 2 is set aside for the performing arts area of Dance. With the commitment of Lighting Up the Arts in Week 8 this term, the focus will be on Choreography.
They will learn how choreography enhances a choral performance and will explore choreographic techniques  and learn a range of movement routines. They will work collaboratively to rehearse these and then perform for an audience demonstrating their technical and expressive skills.
They will learn how their bodies can move in a variety of ways using space, energy, direction, shapes and pathways to create and perform dances.
They will talk about why and how people dance and will learn dances from a range of cultures, times and places.

Japanese
Days of the week, time, greetings

PE
In PE this term students will be focusing on the fundamental movements needed to perfect their skills in athletics disciplines of long jump, discus, shot put, high jump and sprints. Students born in 2008. 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2004 will then participate in the athletics trials later in the term. Successful students will attend the SAPSASA District Athletics day early in term 3. All students will continue to focus of developing fair play strategies through invasion games.

Hi everyone!

Well I sure am glad to be back in the classroom after last week’s training. I certainly learnt a lot, but sitting inside and listening for hours on end really doesn’t do much for me. If only we had GoNoodle to get us moving!

This week the Year 3’s have NAPLAN. The timetable is as follows:

Please ensure you children are at school before the 8.50 bell so that we can get organised and minimise disruptions for all of the classes. After coming to the classroom and doing the roll, the Year 2’s will go to the Library with Simone and join us again after each test is over.

On another note, we have 2 exciting events coming up to support our learning in HASS. On Thursday 24th May (week 5) Peter Donovan will be visiting the class to talk with us about being a Historian. He is really looking forward to telling us what he does and answering lots of questions. Following this, on Wednesday 30th May (week 6) Rooms 13, 14 and 15 will be going to Gawler Museum. More information is in the consent forms, which will be sent home tomorrow (Tuesday). If you are able to support us on the excursion, and you have a DCSI clearance and RAN training, please let me know!

Home learning for the fortnight will also be sent home tomorrow. The spelling words are revision from past tests, or from the Oxford word list. They are handwritten lists, chosen by the children.

Welcome to Term 2. I hope you all enjoyed the last two weeks. It sounds like many of you had a wonderful time camping, holidaying and seeing friends and family.

Here’s a bit of information to keep you updated…

Term 2 Overview

Our main themes will be around communication, technology and time. Starting conversations about these topics at home can give children a great advantage in the classroom. Hearing the language of these topics in various contexts helps children to make more connections between what they learn at school and what they experience in their own lives and the world around them.

Here is some language we might start to use:
– time (minutes, hours, months, seasons, duration, past, present, future, measure)
– communication (verbal, non-verbal, media, purpose, global, personal)
– technology (develop, evolve, efficient, improve, advance, resources, materials, user friendly)

Week 2
Last term I was appointed as the Health and Safety Representative for the school. In order to find out what I actually got myself into, I have a full week of HSR training in week 2. Lia Delgado will be taking the class for the week.

DCSI clearance and RAN training
Many of you have a DCSI clearance, which allows to you to volunteer with the class on excursions and camps. Please check the expiry date of your clearance, as they are only valid for 3 years. If your clearance has expired, or is close to expiring, visit the office to begin the process of getting another clearance.

Moving forward, all volunteers who are working with children one-on-one, or in small groups outside of the classroom, or on excursions/camps, will also need to complete training in Responding to Abuse and Neglect (RAN). Please inquire at the office about this training. If you have already done the training you may need to do the short update course online to ensure that your certificate is still valid.

Have your say about the Yearbook
As requested by our Governing Council and School Improvement Team, we are currently reviewing our Year Book and are seeking community feedback so that we can evaluate its continuance and future options.

Our school invests substantial time and resources each year to the design and production of the Year Book.  Historically around 200 copies have been sold.  As you can appreciate it is a huge commitment, so if you buy it, tell us why, and if you don’t purchase a copy we need your thinking too!  It would be appreciated if you could please take a few minutes to complete the survey.

… which means sausage sizzle lunch for those who want it, and early dismissal at 2.10pm!

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU!!

Congratulations on such a successful stall. I am so impressed with the great team work and positive energy displayed by everyone. It was great to have so many offers to help, do a second shift and to work in an job they weren’t prepared for- so resilient!

Thank you to all of the families that donated goodies and the amazing volunteers who cooked the barbecue and supported the children to be successful sausage sellers. None of this would have been possible without you!
Also, a shout out to Cimarosti Brothers Colonel Light Meat Store. They kindly sold us the sausages at a really great price. If you don’t already buy your meat from them I hope you’ll take the time to visit their shop and support a local business that supported us!

Even though we tried our best, we couldn’t sell off all of the sausages. The left overs will be used on Friday for an impromptu class celebration. If your child is keen for another sausage sizzle, then don’t worry about packing their lunch!

Below are 2 collections of photos.

The first is part of our preparation of Enterprise day. Sellers had to choose 3 items, decide a fair price, and give change to the buyers. After this the children swapped roles. The buyers had an opportunity to make some money back by now selling some items, and the sellers got to spend their hard earned money.

The second collection is a display of my (dismal) attempt to take photos of our stall at Enterprise Day. Hopefully some more photos will be shared with staff soon, then I will pass them on too!

Dear Black Jaguars,

Just a reminder about our science excursion tomorrow.

Please pack fruit, recess, lunch and water bottle in a plastic bag. We will be out from 9.30am until 2.30pm, so please don’t bring money or order a lunch order.

Get a good night’s sleep so you’re ready for the sciency goodness!

Hi everyone,

Only one more sleep!

This afternoon permission slips will be going home for the stalls using face paint, nail polish, hair product etc. Please fill in and return to the stall tomorrow if your child would like to visit these stalls.

Please remember to bring your child’s hat, and provide sunscreen at it’s going to be a toasty 33 degrees!

The day kicks off from 12.30 tomorrow, and runs until 2pm. Our stall is actually starting at 11.10 so that we can get the pre-orders done and cook some of the sausages ready for 12.30. With the early start I anticipate we will also have an early finish, which means plenty of time for the Jaguars to browse and buy if they wish.

I encourage you to leave your children at school when the event concludes. The money will be taken to classrooms for counting, which is a very exciting and rich learning opportunity.

Thank you so much to the parents that have already begun to bring donations. We still need many loaves of bread. If you can donate some sliced white bread tomorrow morning please let me know by 5pm as I will be going to the shops tonight for any last minute items we might need.
